Heat shock protein–lipid raft interaction and viral infection. Respiratory syncytial virus infection is associated with the formation of inclusion bodies, which are essential for viral replication and polymerase activity. These inclusion bodies are rich in lipid rafts and HSP70. Blocking HSP70 with a specific antibody reduced viral polymerase activity in a dose-dependent manner. Among Japanese encephalitis viruses, HSP70 is an integral part of the viral binding and entry mechanism. Disruption of lipid rafts by cholesterol depletion shifts the virus/HSP70 complex to a nonraft region of the membrane and prevents viral entry without affecting its binding to HSP70
